Mike Rennie was a merman, this meant that he was super attractive to the opposite sex. Now this might be great for many men to have female dropping at their feet and thinking they are God's gift, but to Mike it wasn't. It was a curse. He had all the girls at the school lusting after him. Female teachers never said a bad word about him. Women in general in Pandora were always super sweet to him. It was nice and all, and he was never nasty to them, but it just wasn't for him. He hated the fact that he was a merman and was attracted to the opposite sex. For the longest time he could never fully understand why he never fell for any of the girl's advances on him.
He was pretty sure that he was broken. Why couldn't he say yes to the date from the blonde girl in the year below him? Why did he have to turn down the offer to take the brunette next door to the school dance? Why had he felt uncomfortable when his friend's kid sister tried to kiss him? Surely since females were so attracted to him and he had the pick of the girls at the school, was he not interested? Then one day, it struck him, he wasn't straight, he was gay. However, and he was pretty sure his gaydar was working perfectly fine, every single gay guy never seemed interested in him in the slightest. Fair enough if it turned out they already had a boyfriend, then that explained it. But, most of the time, they were single, as they would make it abundantly clear they were.
So, why couldn't any of them fall for him? He was so lonely because of it. He craved attention and as much as all the women being nice to him was lovely, it wasn't the attention that he wanted. On yet another down night, at Lux, he decided on one last ditch attempt at trying to win over the affections of a guy that had walked into the club earlier and it was clear that he was gay. Yes, Lux was a nightclub, but it was open to all ages, and they allowed alcohol to be served to those who were over eighteen, where as most bars it was over twenty-one.
This guy that walked in, was really easy on the eye, so Mike thought. Even if at the end of the day he just got another mate out of it, it was better than nothing. But he hoped that it would be more than that. So he walked over to him, “Hi, I'm Mike Rennie, I was wondering if I could buy you a drink?” He asked smiling. When the boy spoke, with his twinkling eyes and beautiful smile, he noticed he was British. “You bloody can mate, vodka and tonic please, that would be great.” He didn't offer his name, and Mike wondered if he should ask, or wait until he introduced himself. He wasn't usually this awkward around the guys, but for some reason, there was something about this one that had him all a fluster.
So Mike went to the bar, ordered the vodka tonic and a beer for himself and then smiled, handing over the drink to the guy. “Want to sit down at the back?” Mike asked and the guy nodded his head. “Okay, cheers mate.” Realising he hadn't introduced himself and feeling highly ignorant, he then held his hand out, “I'm Dylan Stevens, so sorry for being so bloody ignorant mate. Thanks for this.” So they both made their way towards the booth at the back where it was somewhat a little more quieter from the music and bustle of the bar itself.
Once sat down, Mike spoke first, “So, I haven't seen you around here before, are you new to Pandora?” That was the thing with Pandora, people just kept turning up. You had no idea where from or why, they just appeared. The town must just keep expanding to take new people. Not that Mike questioned it, he was a merman for god's sake. This was a special place full of special people, clearly. Dylan smiled, “Yeah mate, sort of. I came from the UK looking to break into the music world in America but ended up here and I don't even bloody know why.” He chuckled, and rubbed at his neck with his hand.
That was the truth. In England he had been aspiring pop star and after cracking the UK charts, he decided to make it big in the States. He had started out in Los Angeles like most of the budding pop stars, and was doing well. He even got signed up, and then suddenly, he was here. He had no idea why either. It was almost like he was possessed. Maybe he was and he didn't know it. Still, he liked the name of the town, it was interesting, freaky. Dylan was into all things like that. He loved the occult and all the creatures of the night and Pandora seemed to scream that. Even some of his music had a haunting sound to it, if you could describe it as that. “Ah, yeah, Pandora tends to do that to people. Meaning that quite often new people just turn up and they have no idea why. I could probably tell you a lot about the place, but not sure if you are ready for it.” Mike offered and chuckled a little. He took a few sips of his beer, and Dylan thought about that. Then realising he wanted to know more, he nodded his head. “Yeah, sure, spill, tell me, I am pretty sure that it has to be quite unique with a name like Pandora.”
So, Mike began to tell him all about the town in which Dylan had found himself in. How it contained many supernatural creatures and the like. The whole time Dylan's face didn't give too much away, maybe a risen eyebrow here and there. When Mike had finished, Dylan let out a low whistle. “Right mate, what drugs you been on?” He laughed, but Mike shook his head. “None, it's the truth. I'm a merman for example.” This made Dylan guffaw and spit the drink he had just taken. “Where's your tail then mate? Is it tucked away, can I see it? Does it only come out in salt water?” He winked and chuckled some more. Mike did sort of laugh along but he was also quite affronted at the same time. “It's not like a mermaid from fairy tales. It means that women are attracted to me. They drop at my feet. Not that it's what I want or like or even need.” He tried to explain and this seemed to get Dylan's attention more. “You're gay? I sort of picked up on that to be fair, but wait, if only supernatural people live here, why am I here? There ain't nothing bloody special about me.” He rubbed at the back of his neck, or was there? Hadn't he said he felt like coming here randomly made him feel like he had been possessed? “Wait, can demons just like take over a person's body like it says in books and supernatural shows?” Dylan asked, genuinely curious. Mike nodded, “Some are born, some take over someone's body. Why did you ask that?” Dylan smiled, “The whole just turning up here when I had been doing so well in Los Angeles. Just thought before that it was like I had been possessed.” No sooner had he said that, his eyes flickered to black, Mike was quick to pick up on that. “You're a demon, I just seen your eyes turn black.” Huh, so that's what he had turned into. Oh well, he'd run with it. “Not all demons are nasty though, right? I mean I have always been a nice guy I don't want to be turning nasty now.” He laughed, but he was a little nervous about it.
To be fair, Mike knew there were a few demons in Pandora who were all rather nice and caused no trouble. Then there were the mean ones that killed and then there was the trouble makers but not really nasty. “You can be nice, you don't have to be mean, depends on the demon that has taken you over, but if you haven't woken up with blood on you, then I'd say you're good.” He winked and chuckled. Dylan raised his eyebrow, “Nope, not woken up like that since I came here, so I think I'm good. Do you know if the owner of the club is looking for any singers? I need to sing, it's in my blood, my human blood at least. I can't get a recording career here.” Mike wasn't sure if Lucifer would be needing singers, but it wouldn't do any harm for Dylan to ask. “You can always ask the owner. Not sure if he's around tonight. But look up Lucifer Morningstar, it's his club. He'll soon let you know.” Dylan laughed, “You're bloody kidding me, Lucifer, the king of hell owns this place? Well, he's hardly going to turn a demon down, is he?” He laughed some more, and Mike guessed that Lucifer wouldn't.
Some slow music began to play and Mike thought he would make his move. “So, do you want to dance?” He asked, it was clear that Dylan was gay and he had already pointed out that he was himself, without feeling uncomfortable about it. However, Dylan wasn't prepared for that, he thought that Mike was only looking for a friend. He wasn't in the least bit interested in Mike, not like that anyway. He wasn't attracted to him at all. “I'm sorry mate, you seem a nice enough guy yeah, but I'm not really, well, I'm not really...” He struggled to say what he wanted to as he didn't want to upset the guy. So Mike filled the rest in for him, “Please don't say you're not gay, because you definitely are. You're just not attracted to me, are you? I get it. You wouldn't be the first guy to turn me down flat. Have you any idea how much it sucks to be gay and only have women attracted to you?” He blurted out and then sat back into the chair and for the first time in a long time, he began to cry. He couldn't help it, he was so frustrated with life like this. Being gay and not able to be with the right sex. Apart from his sister and odd friends, he was so lonely, felt so lonely. Life was cruel and unfair.
Dylan feeling awful for him, got up and moved round to where he was sitting and placed an arm around him. He began to hug him, “I'm so sorry mate. It's not that I don't think you're not hot, but I'm just not, I can't explain it, but I'm not attracted to you at all. I can be your friend if you'll have me, I need one after all, I'm new remember.” He held Mike in the embrace until he calmed down and stopped crying. After several moments Mike gently pulled out of the embrace. “Thanks for that. Yeah, friends is good, it's better than nothing I guess. Feel like I've made a fool of myself again.” Dylan gave him a sympathetic smile. “It bloody sucks that you're gay and only attractive to females. Fuck your life mate, that's all I can say. Hey, maybe just maybe, someone will be immune and you'll get your guy, you just never know. I'll be the bestest friend you can have though, I promise you that. Want another drink?” He laughed and then went to the bar, ordered them both the same and returned to the booth and the two of them spent the rest of the evening, just talking and getting to know each other better.
Mike had really enjoyed getting to know Dylan last night at Lux, but he was still somewhat annoyed that the guy hadn't felt any attraction towards him at all. It's not like it hadn't happened to him before of course. However, it was really beginning to affect his mental health and he knew that he was going to have to talk to someone about it. His first port of call was his sister Jade.
So, the morning after his night, he was a little hungover, as he and Dylan had ended up knocking back the drinks like they were about to go out of fashion. He shuffled into the kitchen in his dressing gown, rubbing at the back of his neck, and stifling a yawn as he blindly made his way to the coffee machine, not even noticing that his sister was already there, and having breakfast. Yes, he was still quite hammered. He almost jumped when he heard Jade's voice, “Morning, heavy night bro?” She asked and laughed, as she hugged her mug of coffee.
Their parents had already left the house for work, he and his sister were still at the school, though for him it was the last year and for his sister she had another one to go after this. There was only a year between them and they were as close as siblings could be without being classed as incest. He turned his head slowly over his shoulder, “You could say that sis.” He poured the coffee and sat across from her. “Another shitty night of, sorry mate, I can only be your friend.” He sipped on his coffee and Jade reached across with her hand and squeezed his arm. “Sorry. I can't begin to imagine what it must be like. I wonder if it would be the same had I been lesbian. You know how for me it's guys that fall at my feet. I wonder if I had been into chicks if none of them would have fancied me back.” Mike shrugged and sighed, “No clue, but I wish that was the case, just for the sake of testing that theory out. It fucking sucks man. I'm so lonely. I mean, I know I've got you and mom and dad, but we all need that special someone, feel like I will never get the love of my life.” He sighed and thought back to how stupid he felt for making a half assed pass at that guy Dylan last night. At least he had been nice about it, but didn't stop him from feeling super embarrassed about it.
Jade felt really sorry for him. She couldn't begin to imagine what it must be like to feel lonely like that. To be fair she hadn't found the right person yet either. Though it wasn't for the lack of attention. Most of the jocks at school lusted after her but she knew why that was. It would take a special guy to win her love over. She wasn't going to let all the guys falling at her feet stop her from being with the one that she deserved to be with. “I'm sorry Mike. I wish there was something I could suggest to make things better for you. How many guys have you tried to ask out on a date now?” Mike thought about that. For a long time he hadn't even known he was gay. He had lots of friends at school, girls and boys, but it had taken him until the age of fifteen to realise that he simply wasn't attracted to any of the girls that were falling all over him. He was nineteen now, almost twenty. “About five years or so. None of the boys have ever been interested in anything more than friendship. I have made some good friendships out of them, but that's not what I want. You know? I want more than that.”
That was a long time for her brother to have struggled with his feelings and that whole isolation thing from having the love of someone special. She knew that it wouldn't matter that he had the love of his family, he wanted more and he deserved to get that. Mike was the sweetest guy. He was so good with their parents and to her. He was protective also. They hadn't even really fought, that's how sweet and adorable he was.
“Have you spoken to anyone about this situation? You know like any of the witches in town to see if they can carry out some sort spell to stop the female attraction or something?” It was all she could think of as a suggestion. However, Mike shook his head and frowned. “Nah, not really sure what they could do? Not like they could take away the whole merman, not like they could make me human, is it? I mean, is it possible? I don't even know. Apart from being super attractive to female, this whole merman doesn't have much else going for it other than being able to sing.” He chuckled a little. Though when he did sing, that's when all the women usually began to crowd around him, and they looked like they were completely mesmerised by him.
Jade wasn't sure, but they lived in a very magical town, and surely there had to be someone who could help her brother get over this? They had a myriad of supernatural beings in this town and lots of witches and the last she had heard they had a Campbell witch in town, two of actually and that a trinity had been born. If anybody was going to be able to help her brother, it might be them. Someone had to help him. “How about you ask Lucifer? He has good connections to most of the witches and he's also, you know, an angel. True, fallen, but he still has the powers of one. Maybe he can do something to help you. Maybe not make you a normal human, but maybe he can do something to make you attractive to men?”
Mike thought that over. True a lot of people would die at the thought of asking Lucifer for anything, but he wasn't the evil thing that a lot of people made him out to be. He's actually quite a nice person, just misunderstood, like many of them in Pandora. “I guess I could. Put it this way, it won't do any harm, would it? I mean, nothing is happening just now, so he can't make it any worse for me.” He chuckled a little, but inside, he was still cracking, still depressed as shit over it. His coffee had cooled down enough that he was able to down it and he already began to feel a little more fresh. “How about you anyway? Anybody special for you on the horizon?” He hadn't spoken to his sis about her social life recently, having been too wound up over his own mess of a one. She smiled, “Not sure. Got my eyes on someone. He's certainly had his eyes on me, but all guys do, so does he really like me for me, or just because my body and brain tells him that he has to?” She laughed, they were as bad as each other. This mermaid and merman thing was a damn curse. If only life could be so much easier, you like a guy, date the guy, fall in love with the guy, in her case, or in her brother, like a guy, date a guy, fall in love with the guy. It sucked that it couldn't be that simple for the both of them.
Mike smiled, “Well, he'd be daft not to like you for who you are rather than what you are. I can sound him out for you if you like. Go talk to him and see if he will spill anything that would let you know one way or another.” Jade smiled, but shook her head. She knew what kind of things her brother would say and it was best for him not to get involved. “Thanks, but no thanks. You usually chase them away with the Spanish Inquisition. I'll wait and see if he asks me on a date and take it from there.” Mike chuckled and pulled a face, “Very well then. Anyway, I'm going to take some paracetamol and then go for a shower and try and get some life back into me. Talk to you soon.” And off he went, leaving Jade to finish her breakfast in peace.
Jade not being sure whether her brother actually would contact Lucifer or not, decided to do it for him. So she left the kitchen, went to the table, picking up her phone, she sent a text and asked if Lucifer was busy and if not, could he call to the house to talk with her brother. She got a reply almost immediately saying that he would pop round later in the afternoon. This made her feel more at ease. Now all she had to do, was to make sure that her brother didn't disappear before Lucifer arrived.
So Jade had managed to keep her brother at home, forcing him to watch a feel good movie that would make him recover from his deep hangover, so when the doorbell rang she already knew that it would be Lucifer. She allowed him into the house and then made a quick exit up to her bedroom, to let her brother talk to him alone. He may have spoken to her initially, but she felt that talking to Lucifer was something that he had to alone. Lucifer made his way into the lounge room, and sat down, he never waited to be offered a seat, as it was a given that he was welcome in everybody's home in Pandora. “So, your sister Jade tells me that something is troubling you and that I might be of assistance somehow. How might I help you?”
He was sitting forward and Mike sighed, wondering where to actually start. He didn't want to appear desperate, but he was, in a way. He needed company that wasn't his family or friends. “Well, you know that I'm a merman, the female version of a siren?” Lucifer nodded, “Indeed. Which means you will not be short on women you lucky little minx you. I wish I had that luck.” He was teasing, but he couldn't help it. To be honest, he could have any woman he wanted as well, with a little persuasion, but he really didn't like to use that to get the affections of a woman. He preferred to know that their feelings were real, not conjured by him.
Mike chuckled a little, but rubbed at his neck awkwardly, “Well, that's kind of the problem. Women aren't my type if you understand me.” Lucifer began to say he didn't understand, when the penny dropped. He raised his eyebrow at him, and his mouth began to open and close, as he tried to form a sentence that was worth saying. He started to laugh, that silly school boy way that he sometimes did when something really tickled him. “Oh, you go for men, I see. Well, can't you just tell the girls that you're not their type and just go after a guy that is?” He couldn't understand why it shouldn't be that simple, therefore why had Jade got him involved? Mike rolled his eyes and sighed. Yeah, oh how he wished that it could be that easy. He shook his head.
“Nope, that's to say that I can tell all the girls that I'm not their type, but I can't seem to get a guy attracted to me. Yes, I am talking about other gay guys, not just any random bloke that takes me fancy. They all turn me down flat, saying that I'm a great guy and all, but they're not attracted to me. It has to do with the whole merman thing and being irresistible to the opposite sex.” He ran his hands through his hair, starting to feel annoyed all over again. “It sucks. I love my family and I've got good friends, but everybody needs someone to love and love them back who is that special someone. I'm never going to have that, unless...” He trailed off, and Lucifer finished the sentence for him. “Unless I can do something to help you. I'm not sure that I can I'm afraid. I can take souls away, I can return them, I can heal people and hell I can even bring people back from the dead, but make someone love you? Not something I can do. I'm not a cupid I'm afraid.” However, it did make him wonder if his new little trinity would be able to help Mike in some way. They most likely wouldn't be able to take his power away, but maybe, just maybe they could create a spell to make gay men attracted to him, or make him a love potion or something like that.
Mike's face fell, though he hadn't really expected Lucifer to be able to help him, that had been his sister's idea, not his. Lucifer had admitted to being able to do a lot, but make someone love him, that was out of his hands. “It's fine, thought it would be useless, but Jade insisted that I ask you as there isn't really anybody else with a magnitude of power like you do.” He would just have to get used to being a lonely out of love guy. He had been like this for the past five years, so it wasn't as if he wasn't used to being without the love of a guy anyway. Lucifer put up his hand at Mike's defeatist response, “Hold on, just because I said I can't help, doesn't mean I don't have other possibilities, bloody hell. Or new Trinity might be able to help in some way. They might be able to create a love spell or potion or something to help.” Mike gave him a bit of a smile, but in truth, he wasn't sure that he liked that idea. Wasn't that in a way forcing someone to love him? He didn't want that, not if it meant that by all accounts, it wasn't going to be real. He wanted a real love. “That's cool and all, but I'd rather the person loved me for real, not have it fabricated if that makes sense? No offence.”
Lucifer waved his hand and smiled. He fully got where Mike was coming from. Hadn't he just thought earlier about not liking to persuade females to be with him for that very reason, that he wouldn't know if their love for him was genuine? “I get it, not a problem. They might still be able to help in some way though. Maybe try to find out why it is that other gay men aren't attracted to you. I mean, I don't fully understand it myself. Not that I should know the ins and outs of every supernatural creature in Pandora.” He chuckled, but he could tell how much this was getting to the young lad. So if there was anything that he could do to help, then he was going to do his best to make it happen. This gave Mike a little bit of hope again. It would be really good if his Trinity could do something for him. “I'd like that. When do you think you could ask them?” He didn't want to be too pushy, but in all fairness, he was so fed up of not being loved by someone who thought he was their soulmate. Luci smiled, “I'll talk with them all later, maybe see about tomorrow if everybody is good with that.” Mike smiled more genuinely this time, “Ah, that would be awesome if you could, thanks man.” The more Lucifer did things to help people, the more he liked it.
Being the better person was definitely a better way to live, rather than being like the devil all the time. In fact, he couldn't help but hope that one of these days he would have done enough to redeem himself that he would go back to being full on angel, and no longer fallen, and no longer with the nasty red face. “Not a problem Mike. I'll go now and see if I can get to talk to them and will let you know if it will indeed go ahead tomorrow. Just one thing, do you have anything personal that means a lot to you, that I can borrow please? If they are going to try and find out why other gay men aren't attracted to you, it might help if they have something or yours to channel into.” Mike nodded his head enthusiastically, he liked to play the guitar, but he could be without it for a night or two. He ran to his bedroom, picked up the case and headed back to Lucifer. “This ought to work. I usually play it every night, it has a deep connection to me.” He took it from him and nodded, “This will be perfect. I'll take care of it, I promise. Right, I'll contact you later then.” With the guitar, Lucifer made his exit, leaving Mike feeling just a little more hopeful that maybe this Trinity might be able to do something and soon, he might actually get a love of his own, someone to care about and protect and who would do the same back for him.
Right, I'll contact you later then.” With the guitar, Lucifer made his exit, leaving Mike feeling just a little more hopeful that maybe this Trinity might be able to do something and soon, he might actually get a love of his own, someone to care about and protect and who would do the same back for him.
