It was the day of the funeral for Jonah Wheeler, which was a very sombre moment for everyone involved. It started at the Wheeler home with Jake, Aurora and John. It had only been two days since Jonah's body was found, but it was traditional to have a funeral early where a wolf was concerned. It was something to do with the old lore that the sooner the dead was buried or burned the better, to stop evil spirits entering the body. Centuries ago, they would have been burned within hours of the body being found, but in this time, that just wasn't a possible thing to do. The people that would be saying goodbye to Jonah were the ones that mattered the most, his blood, Jake, and his extended family, the wolves and Rori.
Rori had never been to a normal funeral before, her father had shielded her from the sadness of them whenever a family member had passed on. However, she wanted to be there for Jake and nobody was keeping her away, despite the fact that she was torn up on the inside, and had to concentrate really hard not to burst into tears every minute or two. To be fair to Jake, he was coping with things very well now. He was keeping his cool, emotions in check, but then, they hadn't started the funeral ritual as of yet.
Jonah was lying in an open casket, that would soon be closed, but for now, he looked like he was just fast asleep, albeit a little on the ashen side and cold to the touch. The casket was surrounded with flowers and two wreaths. One that spelled out brother and one that spelled out friend. The flowers were in shades of blue, white and pale yellow. They were some of Jonah's favourites colours. He wouldn't be having the traditional funeral, the whole church thing and service, that wasn't how the wolves did it. No, this would be a very different affair indeed.
Once all the wolves were gathered outside the Wheeler home, Jake, John and Rori made their way outside and John locked the door and they all climbed into a minivan which John was driving. He took them all to the lake on the edge of town, it ran into the sea eventually, but nobody ever knew which sea or how it got there, it just did. Once they were at the location, John, Jake and the rest of the wolves carried the now closed casket and placed it on top of a raft that the older wolves had built over the past two nights. The raft itself had a built up area, so that it was away from the water, and the casket was secured to that area. John then took out a lighter and lit the edge of the casket and with one gentle push, it eased off the bank and into the water and began to float away, the flames growing bigger as it did so.
John spoke as the raft carried the casket away from them,
“Elders take our brother Jonah Wheeler and keep him safe in your care, watch over him and keep him from evil. Our brother, loved and taken too soon. Trust me, you will be avenged, somehow, some way, you will not have died in vain brother. Rest easy.” His words of rest easy was chorused by all the wolves and then one by one they went down on one knee and placed their hands over their hearts, with Jake doing so after everyone else. Rori, being unsure of this ritual, just stood behind Jake and kept her hands on his shoulders, tears falling as she watched the casket burn and disappear into the distance.
All the wolves remained in that position until the casket could no longer be seen and then one by one, they all stood up, with Jake being the last to do so. They all began to hug one another and then finally Jake, and expressing their deep sorrow to him for his loss. Now that the difficult part was over with, it was time to head back to the house for the wake. Only, the wake wasn't happening at Jake's home, it was happening at John's. He had already set it up. He had a fairly big home. Alright, maybe not as big as James's home, who seemed to have a bit of a foster home going on there, but it was big enough to take all the wolves into the conservatory. It was like the size of a community hall, with plenty of floor space. He had set up tables and chairs, in the way that you would for a wake or wedding. There was even a bar set up at the far end.
Now that they were at John's house for the wake, they had also been joined by James, Ryder and Sam. Rori wanted her family there for support should Jake get too upset for her to deal with, so the four of them took to a table of their own and Jake, John and Chase joined them. None of the tables were so far apart that they couldn't talk to one another however. James, Ryder and Sam gave both Rori and Jake a hug when they had arrived and expressed their sorrow to him and still Rori felt that he was taking it all very well indeed.
James was first to talk, “So, how did it go?” He directed the question to Rori, she shrugged and gave a bit of an awkward smile, “Okay, different. Not like a funeral back home would be.” This made John chuckle a little, “Us wolves do things a bit different is all.” James just gave a nod of his head with a risen eyebrow, so Chase elaborated on it. “We set them off to sea on a raft with the casket burning, it's an elder thing, that is meant to warden off evil spirits from entering the body.” Again James gave a nod of his head, “Okay then. So long as it went well, that's all that matters really.” John and Chase nodded, “Yeah, it did, as well as can be expected anyway.” John answered. All the time Jake staying quiet, probably thinking of his past times with his brother, who had raised him from the moment their parents had died.
For the longest time it was just him and Jonah. His brother was twelve years older than him and Jake was only eight when their parents were taken from them. So Jonah was twenty and he became the parent and big brother. He had no idea how he was going to cope without Jonah, and yet he knew that he would have to somehow get on with life. At least he had Rori now oh and Ryder. The whole imprinting thing that had happened with Ryder as well. He hadn't even gotten round to telling either Rori or her brother about that. He was going to have to. The dreams that he had had, and the laughs that he and Jonah had as they figured out what they dreams had meant.
It was John who finally broke into Jake's thoughts when he asked, “So, we all know that Jonah wouldn't want us sitting miserable and wallowing, so who has any funny stories that they can tell us about Jonah to lighten the mood? It's what he would want and anyone who knows him would know that.” The wolves all slapped their hands on the table and tapped their feet on the floor, basically their way of agreeing with John. “Shall I go first?” John then added, and they all cheered, and so he began.
John thought back to one of the funniest memories that he shared with Jonah, it was when Jake was still fairly young and at school. He wasn't even sure if Jonah would ever have told his brother, but it was golden. “This happened only a few months after Jonah was left to bring up his young brother, and Jake was at school, I called round without any warning. Jonah had been in the shower, and he came out with nothing but a towel around his waist. What he didn't realise was that it hadn't been tied at the back properly. The bloody thing only fell down didn't it? I saw him in all his bloody glory, ain't something I had ever wanted to see again any time soon. I mean, fuck me, didn't know where to bloody look did I? I mean if I batted for that team, well I mightn't have been so put out. Well, the look on Jonah's face, redder than a boiled lobster let me tell ya.” John hit his hand on the table as he fell about laughing. This of course had the rest of the wolves in an uproar, and when they all turned their attention to Jake, he was sitting with his mouth open, his expression not clear to read.
Suddenly John wondered if maybe that hadn't been the right story to kick off with, what with the whole not wanting to see him buff ever again. “You alright kid?” John prompted, just in time to see Jake's face slowly turn into a smile, “Yeah, sorry, I just, well, he never told me that. Did that really happen? His towel fell and you copped an eyeful?” Jake asked, and John made a mock disgusted face and nodded, “Aye, not something a man like me wants to see, ya know? I'm a man's man, still, we had a good laugh over it though. One of my better memories believe it or not.” Jake's smile grew bigger. “I wish he had told me, it makes me wonder how many more stories you guys might know that I don't. How old was I when that happened?” John laughed, “Eight maybe? Nine, it wasn't long after your folks passed on I know that much. The next day I went and bought him an actual bathrobe and told him to wear that in future if he has to hurry to the door.” Jake's eyes grew wide, “So that's why he suddenly had one of them? He never did tell me how he got it, it was just suddenly on the back of the bathroom door.” Now he too was laughing along with the rest of the wolves. Maybe this wake and talking of funnier times wasn't such a bad idea after all and John was right, Jonah wouldn't have wanted them to be wallowing.
James, Sam and Rori were laughing also. “Have to admit John, that's exactly the kind of reaction I'd have had also and would have bought him a bathrobe to wear.” James chuckled. Neither he nor Rori could share any stories, as they hadn't been in Pandora long enough to be fair. At least, he didn't have anything he could say, it was possible in the short time, that Rori might have something she could share, but she seemed to be staying quiet, just holding Jake's hand and allowing other people to talk instead. “Right, so that was one of mine and probably the best, anybody else got anything funny they can share?” John said, as he picked up a beer and started to drink from it.
Jackson lifted his hand, “I've got one. You know your brother for all that he was fit and all, struggled so much to find a girlfriend. Anyway, probably didn't help that the guy's radar was well off. At the community club, he was playing pool one night with me, when a couple of girls came in. He had his eyes on one of them right away. I knew that he'd get nowhere with them, they had come in together, and just the way that they looked at one another, it was clear to see they were, together together. Did Jonah see it? Not a chance, up he strolls and gives it his best chat up line. God did he have some awful ones. Is your daddy in prison he asked her, and she said no, why, and he goes, as he stole the stars from the skies and put them in your eyes. Stupid, rolled my eyes, and then the other girl goes, actually I stole them and put them in her eyes and they're mine, so fuck off. Never seen your brother go a shade so red in my life. Brilliant, chats up a female and she's lesbian.” Jackson cracked with laughter, which made John follow in and everyone at the same time.
Jake shook his head. “He never told me that one either, don't tell me I'm going to find out all the best stuff about him now that he's dead? Typical of Jonah.” It did hurt a little to say the word dead, but the overall fun of the stories was still very much what he was focusing on. “To be fair, those are quite embarrassing ones, so it's no wonder he kept them to himself.” Chase said, as he nudged Jake and chuckled to which Jake nodded his head, “Yeah, it is a bit. So, anybody else got something funny to tell me about my brother that I might not know?” Jake challenged and this time Jackson's older brother stood up, Derek, or Derry as he gets named by the wolves and his brother Jackson. “So, it really is true to say that Jonah and women didn't mix well at all. Did he tell you about the time that he got thrashed at pool by a girl? He was being all, I'm the best, nobody can beat me and puts down a bet of fifty bucks that he would win against the teenager that had walked in. She was blonde too, kinda ditzy, and she takes him up on it and wipes the floor with him. She was definitely no rookie. Turned out she was the teenage champion of her school league. He was never so affronted, he had to hand over the money but bless the kid, she gave him it back and said that she had won so many tournaments that fifty was a flash in the pan to her.” Derry sat down and laughed and so did everyone else.
Jake was thoroughly enjoying all of this and was now crying with laughter, never mind sadness. “He never told me any of that. I've got a story to tell myself to be honest, and it involves Ryder and Rori. I never did get round to telling you guys this, but I suppose now is as good a time as any.” Ryder looked at him with his eyebrow risen and Rori squeezed at his hand. “Oh, do tell, I really want to know, what we have to do with it.” Rori laughed a little and Ryder grinned and nodded, “Yeah, come on, tell us.” So Jake nodded his head, took a sip of his lemonade and then began to reminisce about the night that he had decided to tell Jonah about his weird dreams that he had been having about Ryder as well as Rori.

After Ryder arrived in Pandora, Jake began to feel a little strange around him. It was quite similar to how he had felt with Aurora when he first saw her that night. The strong urge to need to be with him, to protect him. At the same time he had been having some weird dreams. They were of Ryder in trouble and Jake doing everything that he could to help him and keep him safe. Everything that he was feeling with Ryder was the same as with Rori. This really did weird him out because now he knew what had caused that feeling, that he had imprinted on Aurora. They were soul mates, mated for life sort of thing. So, he couldn't fathom why he was now feeling the same way for Ryder. Did that mean that he was also imprinting on Ryder and if so, did that mean that he also loved him like he did with Rori? He had never been attracted to a guy before, and though he wasn't repulsed by it, he had nothing against same sex relationships, it did freak him out a little.
So, not being able to take it any longer, he had gone to Jonah to talk to him about it. “Hey bro, can I talk to you about something please?” Jonah had put the newspaper down and looked up, “Sure kid, what is it?” Jake sat down and began to tell him about the strange feelings he was having towards Ryder. “You know when I came to you about the strong weird feelings I had been having towards Rori? You came to the conclusion that I had imprinted on her?” Jonah nodded, “Yeah, I remember. Why? Something gone wrong?” Jake shrugged, and neither nodded or shook his head, but sort of tilted his head to the side with a strange look on his face. “I don't know? Ever since Ryder arrived in town I have been having the same sort of feelings about him. I mean, is it possible that I could imprint on two people and both being a different sex? I mean, does that make me gay or bisexual or something?” This had gotten Jonah's attention, and he sat forward, using a hand he rubbed at his chin and then let out a low whistle. Whoa, kid, never heard of that before. Are you sure? Wait, didn't you say that Ryder was Rori's twin? It could be something to do with that, but it's never happened before, not that I know of. I mean, I haven't heard of a wolf imprinting on more than one person before, no matter the sex. Should really talk to John about that, he might know more about it. But it sounds to me like you have imprinted on Ryder as well, and could very well be due to the similar genetics in both, since they're twins, they are, aren't they?”
Jake's jaw fell open and he nodded. “Yeah, but they're different sex, so they can't be identical, like the egg wouldn't have split, where I'd have thought double imprinting would be more of a thing. So, I could have the same feelings of jealousy etc., over Ryder as I have with Rori? I will want to protect him with everything that I have like I do with Rori now? Fuck man, what happens if both are in trouble at the same time and I have to choose, that would be impossible.” Jonah chuckled, and shrugged, “Just have hope that never happens kid. You should talk to them both about it, they need to know though. Do it sooner than later though.” Jake had nodded, but then he hadn't gotten round to telling either of them before Jonah's body had been found and everything went out of his head. All he had cared about was the fact that his brother had died.
Now that he had finished thinking back to that night, he was back in the room, so to speak. “So, yeah, I've imprinted on both of you. Jonah isn't sure that it's something that has happened before. Do you know John?” He asked him, looking in his direction and John shook his head, looking quite puzzled. “Nah, ain't ever heard of that happening before. That's new for sure. Might be time to call on an ancestor to talk about that, see if it has ever happened before, but not to my knowledge. Not a bloody bad thing though, is it? I mean, you lucky bugger, you get two for the price of one.” He winked and chuckled and all the other wolves stamped their feet and laughed. Jake's face went bright red and now Rori finally found some words.
“So, you have imprinted on me and my brother? Does that mean that he is your soul mate too? Like you love him like you love me? Because I'm not really into a three way relationship like that with my brother.” She was half teasing and half serious, looking from Jake to Ryder to her father and to John. All of whom were looking at her with a raised eyebrow and shrugging. Before Jake could say anything, Ryder opened up, “Well, I'll tell you right now, I'm full on straight, so if he feels like that for me as he does for you, he's out of luck.” This got everybody cracking up again. Rori slapped Ryder playfully on the arm, “Trust you.” But to Jake she said, “Does it though? Like, I mean, can you see yourself being with Ryder like you are with me?” Jake wasn't sure what to say or do, the truth was, he had no idea. All he knew was that he would do anything to keep Ryder safe like he would do with Rori. “I don't think I feel that way for him, like the way I do you. I mean, I can't see myself dating him, kissing him, but I do have the urge to make sure he stays safe. I'm just really worried that the both of you might get in trouble at the same time and I'd have to choose. So, please make sure that doesn't happen.” He chuckled a little, but in reality he was still a little freaked out over what it all meant. So he really did think that talking to an ancestor would be a good idea. They didn't call on them often, as they lived away from Pandora, but sometimes you just had to, and it could mean a road trip, but then, he can't leave and neither can any of the wolves. Might have to get the ancestor here to Pandora instead.
James was the next to talk, “So, Jake, I was wondering how you would feel about moving in with us permanently, so that you are not alone in that house of yours?” This got John's attention, he hadn't expected for James to offer that. He was going to see if the kid would move in with him or he could live with him instead. As Alpha, it was up to him to take care of the wolves when they needed it. True, Jake was dating James's daughter, but surely he'd not feel comfortable with her boyfriend living in the same house as his daughter? So he put up his hand to interject, “Well, I was actually going to say that he could come and live with me, it is my duty to care for my wolves.” He wasn't nasty about it, he had to work with James after all, but he said it in a firm voice. However, Jake looked at John and shook his head and turned to James, “If that is alright with you sir, I'd really like that.” James had already allowed him to stay when things were going crazy with the hexed talisman under Rori's bed. James nodded, “I have no issue, but I don't want to step on your Alpha's toes.”
John was a little put out, as he did feel that it was up to him to take care of Jake, but if James was up for the job, then so be it, he trusted his sheriff. “It's fine, I just felt that it was my duty to offer, but if you're happy to have him and he's happy to be there, then I shouldn't stand in the way. I'll contact the ancestors tomorrow though to talk about this double imprinting thing.” It was troubling him a little, as he hadn't heard of it before. Could this be something that had happened before, or was it new? Or was it possible that it had to do with this Gemini Twin thing? James had spoken to him about that the other day.
Jake smiled and nodded, “It's what I want thanks and that's great. So does anybody else have any other stories about Jonah?” Jake asked, as he took Rori's hand and squeezed it. Things started to rumble as one by one, each of the wolves began to talk about memories that they had.
